The Battle of the Battles
If I started a new social network where you could send messages to people, post statuses, poke people and add friends, Mark Zuckerberg probably wouldn't be to happy. So when Sony announced Playstation All Stars Battle Royale in April last year, Nintendo probably weren't too chuffed. Some games in the same series have more differences than these two.
Personally I prefer the characters in SSB. That's probably because Nintendo has way more exclusives that Sony, and more memorable characters, whereas apart from maybe Sackboy, Drake, Kratos and Big Daddy (who isn't a PS exclusive) there aren't many really famous characters, like Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Link or Pikachu. But Battle Royale probably has less crappy characters, who no one really wants to play as (for example Pikmin or Ice Climers) and has better balance. Whilst it might not be what would happen if the two fought in their own universes, it is hilarious to see feeble Sackboy dump tackle the monstrous Mr Bubbles, and any character can beat anyone
When these two are compared (Yes, I'm probably not the first to compare them. Send all hate mail to [email protected]) one factor which is shamefully overlooked is the quality of the levels. In Battle Royale, due to the combat system, the levels can't kill you. Whilst it may seem like a bad feature, I think that it turns out well, because in Smash Bros. falling of the edge of a cliff is infinitely frustrating, and I don't like being reminded about how much of a n00b I am. But instead of being just one game, like SSB, Battle Royale does cross overs, so one second you're fighting in a leveling being created in LittleBigPlanet, and the next the quiz master from Buzz! shows up and completely changes the game. I could understand why others could hate this, but it's a feature I love.
In the end (this isn't going to win me any fans) I probably prefer Battle Royale. Maybe the next installment of Super Smash Bros. will change my mind. There is less luck in it, and it can be played on the go if you have a PS Vita. Either way, unless you can afford both a PS3 and a Wii/ Wii U but only a game for one, not many will actually have to pick between these two. Wait, doesn't that make the entire article invalid?
So yeah, this one was a bit short. Sorry, Path of Exile is one hell of a drug. Anywho, join me on Sunday, as I discuss with my self if realism is really important in Video Games. And as always, shoot me an e-mail at [email protected]. I wasn't joking about the hate mail. I'd feel like I'd really made it if I started getting death threats. And by the way thanks for over 500 views on my Free to play article means a lot.
