Why do Games Keep Reusing Each Other's Stupid Features?
Red Barrels. The escort mission. The quick time event. These are some features that no one really likes, but are in far more games than they should be. The colour of a barrel doesn't ensure it's content's flammability, and eating cake won't heal your bullet wounds, and it will probably be even worse for your type 2 diabetes. So why are they still here? I'm not going to pretend that I fully understand why they are so common. Its not as if anyone would boycott a Mario game because you didn't have to go through a water level filled with Cheep-Cheeps.

When I talked about games that were a bit different, I said it was hard for developers to change things up. Of course, people will buy what they like. But I think that this is almost entirely different. Features like these don't define make games, and they don't turn people off them. Which makes them so much weirder. Is there anyone in Borderlands 2's target audience that felt better about themselves because Lilith yelled out "Well done" in the middle of battle? It just confuses me.
It's hard to work out if games are at all more popular if they involve red barrels, escort missions or food that heals you, but many popular "franchises" like COD, Bioshock, and Fallout have them. Even the Half Life series has escort mission, and they are supposedly perfect!

So to summarize, these are features which are dumb, and their unrelenting presence is ridiculous. They are just nonsensical, and you'd think that if graphics could improve as dramatically as they have, cutting out this kind of crap would be easy. Sadly, I don't think that there is an end to these features in sight. Oh well. At least the mome raths will still outgrabe.
We meet again, people who read keyboards and controllers. Sorry that the articles have been pretty short this week, but I've been super busy. Like Super duper busy. As usual, twitter, @KaC__Official (2x underscore). Oh and happy PS4 day to all the peasants out there. Just kidding. Don't hate me. Or do. Death Threats should be directed to [email protected]
Sorry, but there's no poll today. I know, I'm a tyrant. But there will be an article out on Wednesday. See you then.
