4 reasons why the release of next gen consoles is a good thing, even if you don't buy one.
So, the PS4 is out in America, and the Xbox one is out in New Zealand, Austrailia, and soon the rest of the world. They have the best specifications of a console ever, at least until the Steamboxes come along. I won't be buying one, but to my fellow PC brethren, and those who are sticking to the current-gen for a while, here's my thoughts on why it's good news.
1. Games will be less limited
Okay, this one is clearly more for people with PCs. The simple fact is, that games sell more on consoles. This means the logical move for game developers is to focus on what an Xbox can do, not what a Gaming machine (a Gaben shrine, if you will) can do. For PC users, like myself, this kind of sucks. But even though the PS4 and Xbox One aren't quite as powerful as a high end PC, it is considerably better than the 8 year old Xbox. So hopefully, even the shittier console ports will be up to a higher standard than Saints Row 2 or Resident Evil 4.
2. Current Gen Consoles/Games will be cheaper
I've wanted to play the Last of Us ever since it came out, but paying £180 ($290) for one game seems a bit much. But in a week or two, I'll probably be able to buy the game and a PS3 for a fraction of that price. Sadly, this goes for the Wii U too. Whilst it tried to change things up, it has done much worse than the Wii, and people will now choose other consoles even more. Whilst I want it to do well, I'm not too sad, because I'll probably pick it up for well under £200 ($320) soon enough.
3. A Load of New Games
This one is slightly obvious. Titanfall, Destiny, The Crew, and The Division. I haven't played any of these games yet (Duh) but they all look great. The Next gen consoles offer a fresh start for developers, and a chance to establish a series. Whilst I give the COD series a lot of crap, and heck, it probably deserves it, early on in this Generation COD 4: Modern Warfare came out, and it was a brilliant game. There are no two ways about it, I loved COD 4. It had a brilliant, fast paced multiplayer, and the story wasn't that bad. But it really was the beginning of COD's dominance on Xbox. So maybe when Titanfall 7: return of the robots comes out in 7 years, maybe things will be getting stale, but at least for now we have a minimum of 2 years of great games.
4. Online Communities Improve
Maybe I'm wrong, but ever since COD Ghosts came out, there have been slightly less snipers/spies in TF2, and my mother has become far less promiscuous according to the chats in Battlefield 3. I know that this might be a bit of a generalization, but in it does seem to me that pre-teen players swarm newer games, and newer consoles. I'm not saying that everyone who buys a console is an annoying piece of shit, and maybe my results aren't scientifically accurate. But I'm pretty sure that there is some sort of trend. Oh, well, I can dream.
